KPMG and Kongsberg Digital join forces to improve cyber security in the maritime sector

KPMG Norway and Kongsberg Digital are teaming up to to provide the maritime sector with innovative digital services to address cyber security risks

The digital transformation of the maritime sector and an increase in remote management of vessels induce entanglement of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). Potential technology risks, when not properly identified and handled, can lead to significant operational loss, human danger and financial impact. Last year, one third of all shipping companies experienced one or more cyber-attacks (HIS Fairplay). However today, a bigger concern are those attacks that have not been identified. The majority of reported confirmed industrial control and OT compromises have shown weeks, months and even years passing before detection.

Furthermore, the IMO Maritime Safety Committee is pushing maritime organisations to have cyber risks appropriately addressed by no later than 2021, via their Resolution on Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems (MSC.428(98)). This means that fleet owners will need to prepare and protect their ships and equipment, but also have the right detection and response capabilities in place. The potential implications of noncompliance can be enormous: from operational incidents and malfunctioning equipment to increased vessel insurance and denied port access.
